Tisha B’Av Program: Mourning the Ancient and the Contemporary

Monday, August 12, 2024 8 Av 5784

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM333 Cortland Ave

Join Or Shalom for observance of Tisha B’av, a fast day commemorating destructions that have befallen the Jewish people throughout time and space.

Tisha B’Av serves as the opener to the High Holiday season, and gives us the opportunity to be in relationship with our grief in a way that enables us to enter the High Holidays season with a sense of perspective about ourselves, the world, and how we want to be in the world.

This Tisha B’av, we have much to grieve. Join us as we interweave the traditional chanting of the book of Eicha (Lamentations) with readings and exercises that allow us to grieve the ongoing destruction happening at present in Gaza, the West Bank and Israel and begin our process of cheshbon hanefesh–soul accounting–enabling us to determine how we want to be in relationship to that destruction (and its end) in the coming year.

Click here to learn more about Tisha B’Av and to read Rabbi Faryn’s drash on the topic from this past Friday’s services.

Due to the covid surge, this event will require masking. Masks will be made available upon your arrival.

*Our home at 333 Cortland Ave is a building which requires climbing 21 steps to access. If this poses a barrier to entry for you, but you wish to attend any of our events, please email rabbifaryn@orshalomsf.org with at least 5 days' notice. We will seek a change of venue.

Sorry, Registration has ended.
